Brad Stevens Should End Up With the Coach of the Year Award

The Boston Celtics are lining up nicely to possibly win many awards at the end of the season. Many of the awards can be debated, but one award is definitely going to the Celtics. That award is the Coach of the Year award. Brad Stevens has been borderline coach of the year for a while now, and this year there is no one in his way. The Celtics currently lead the league with a 12-and-two record even with Gordon Hayward having his season-ending injury in the first game of the season.
A case could be made for Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy. The Pistons are playing about expectations with Andre Drummond playing well and finally hitting his free throws. Back to Brad, he is a basketball genius. He may not be loud and media grabbing like Steve Kurr, but when he does speak one better be listening because one will learn something.
The biggest point for Brad Stevens winning the award is that only four players returned from last years squad that had the number one seed in the playoffs. That's a huge roster overhaul for a team that was that successful in the previous season. Most Celtics fan assumed there would be some adjustment time with most of the guys on the team never playing with each other before. Celtics fans assumed wrong. That adjustment period took two games, both losses. Despite significant injuries to Al Horford and Kyrie Irving the Celtics keep winning.
The Celtics also have six rookies on the team this year. Two of those rookies start Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. The Celtics are a young squad, Jaylen just turned 21 and Jayson is 19. Being so young and with the Gordon Hayward injury, the Celtics shouldn't be this good, but they are. The Celtics are outperforming every team and all expectations. The Celtics' key to success is Brad Stevens. Brad Stevens isn't just a figurehead, he gets guys to buy into his system. He coaches men, not just basketball players. His out of bounds plays almost always result in points. He's had guys overperform for years now and he's finally getting some spotlight. When it comes to voting, there is some bias and favoritism between the journalists that vote for Coach of the Year, but it's going to be hard to ignore Brad Stevens this year. He should have won before already, so its long overdue.

  1. I really do admire Brad Stevens and his amazing work in coaching. I agree that he should earn the Coach of the Year award too. His positivity and coaching style influences his athletes which allows them to play to the best of their ability. I believe that is one of the reasons why the team currently has the best record in the Eastern conference.
