PR Tactics for Small Businesses

Every year more small businesses start up shop all around the world. It's important to standout and not get lost in all the new businesses. It can be expensive to hire a professional PR person, which many small businesses can't afford. While there are PR tools you can use to help cover the bases, one must still got to think of a way to create a buzz that can gain traction with the public. Here I have three PR ideas that should help small businesses.
The first idea is to establish one's own "holiday." Many businesses have a special day that comes once a year, like 7-Eleven's "Bring Your Own Cup Day." Once a year, 7-Eleven generates renewed excitement because of the "Bring Your Own Cup Day" for their brand, and finds themselves in local newspapers around the country. This leads me into the second idea, which is to turn heads. Having some kind of shock value, thats not illegal, can be great for a business. TV providers and news stations will want to show one's business to its viewers because of the excitement. This will lead to free advertisement because one wouldn't be paying for the TV providers and news stations. My last idea for small businesses is to figure out one's why. Why is one's story, not one's product or service. Figuring out one's why can make PR and marketing tactics much easier to develop and implement because there will be direction. Direction is key for most PR campaigns. Doing random things that has nothing to do with one's business can turn heads, but what's the point if the random things don't lead back to one's business? That why will give one's business a direction, a direction away from random stunts and towards a goal.
Running a small business can be hard work. Getting people to know about one's business can be even harder. Establishing one's business's own holiday, turning heads and figuring one's why are great PR tactics that can help bring awareness to one's business.
